6.1 Quake hits Tokyo

M6.1 quake jolts Kanto region
TOKYO, April 11, Kyodo - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 hit the Kanto region Monday morning, with an intensity of upper 5 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 registered in southern Ibaraki and northeastern Chiba prefectures, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There's no word on any casualties as of yet. Also, no major American news corporation is reporting on it. Seen a bit on CBC/NWI, that's all. I'll update this diary as soon as there's more on it. I hope nobody got hurt.

The Kanto region is a very densely populated area in Japan, mainly consisting of the large cities Toyko and Yokohama. Silence points us to the USGS site. Looks close to Tokyo, 50km E to be exactly. USGS repots that the hypocentral depth was estimated to be 37 km (23 miles). Now I'm no expert on earthquakes... could have been just a rumble... I don't know what impact a 6.0-6.1 magnitutde has with those geographical distances and the off-shore setting.
